Coney Island has drawn New Yorkers to its beaches since the early 1830s, when carriage roads and steamship travel reduced the travel time to Coney Island and it became a resort area serviced by elegant hotels.

By the 1860's, Coney Island was attracting ever more visitors. However, it remained mostly an overnight resort area until the Brooklyn Bridge and additional rail lines were built in the early 20th century, making it an easy day trip from the city. (continued below)

New Yorkers began flocking in huge numbers to the Coney Island beaches, boardwalk, and amusements that became famous around the world. During its height before World War II, Coney Island offered three large amusement parks (Luna Park, Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park) and many independent amusements that attracted several million visitors per year.

After World War II, various factors contributed to a decline in Coney Island's popularity. The loss of several amusement parks to fire and demolition, the rise of the automobile which brought other options such as Jones Beach, and misguided "urban renewal" plans caused Coney Island to become a shadow of its former self.

The vacant lots, crime ridden public housing projects, and loss of so many amusements brought Coney Island to a low point in the 1970's. The city made a proposal to bring in casinos as a revitalization effort, but it never panned out.

In the early 2000s, revitalization efforts were once again being considered by the city. Plans that encroached upon the amusement area were fiercely opposed by both local residents and New Yorkers citywide. Thor Equities, a development company, was intent on turning the amusement area into condominiums and hotels, buying up parcels of land along the boardwalk. Thor's plans included demolishing The Wonder Wheel, Cyclone rollercoaster, and Nathan's Original Hot Dog stand.

Beloved Coney Island attractions and landmarks were in immediate danger of being lost forever, on top of the legendary losses that the Coney Island amusement zone had already suffered over the years. People began to organize, so that the efforts of Thor Equities to permanently alter the nature of Coney Island would not go unchallenged. The future of Coney Island was being fought in a series of court battles and city agencies.

Finally, in 2009, the city planning commission approved the construction of several thousand units of housing in Coney Island, while simultaneously mandating the preservation of the amusement area. In 2010, a new version of Luna Park was opened with family oriented amusement rides. Then, in the Spring of 2011, an adjacent park named The Scream Zone was opened with several intense rides to intimidate even the bravest thrill seekers.

Other recent improvements to Coney Island have included the construction of a new train station at Stillwell Avenue, the opening of the Keystone Park baseball stadium, and repair of the historic wooden boardwalk. Several vacant lots are now occupied by bustling flea markets and the city has plans to beautify the avenues. Hopefully, further plans to alter the area (including the construction of a giant Vegas-style resort) won't change the fun-for-all identity of Coney Island.
